NDTV bashing

Will somebody ask Prannoy Roy to quit????

The NDTV 9'oclock news is turning me into a media-hating Medusa. With the case of electricity tarriffs, to collapsing buildings in Mumbai and then to the stint in Afghanistan, we do not need George Bush or his government's fear therapy. We have our own home grown democratic gremlin- NDTV to do the above and more.

Case 1 - Protests against electricity tariffs: NDTV's mirch formula: The Great Indian Middle Class is against privatization. I feel sorry for the chap who gets invited every evening - -each show, he seems to improve on his technique to cram in 'No Privatization without competition' in just as fewer seconds as possible without having an NDTV correspondent pounce on the word privatization.
Does Dr Roy even care about 'No privatization without competition'? All he wants to do is join the whipping line and add a few personal blows to what he patronizingly calls 'the Great Indian Middle Class'.

Case 2 - Collapsing buildings in Mumbai: NDTV's mirch formla: X number of people's lives in threat and the Mumbai government finally wakes up! If this isn't the grossest example of misinformation. While dilapidated buildings have been declared such for years and years, it is the residents within the buildings who refuse to budge. The fact that these buildings survived the rains is amazing. However, if they were to tomorrow begin to fall down like a pack of cards, I will be damned if I am asked as the Great Indian Middle Class to pay up for 'relief' efforts.

What has Mumbai afterall come down to? Torrential rains, flooding, gross mismanagement of disaster relief, falling buildings - - and amidst of it all, all the media channels are on 24 hour alerts to continue to display the Mumbai spirit - with the Janmashtami celebrations this past weekend ( where every year more than 60 Govindas are hospitalized and quite a few of them lose their lives) and the upcoming Ganesha celebrations. The next person who comes to me with sound bits on the 'Mumbai Spirit' is going to get smacked!

NDTV's 24X7 is fast losing it's share of eyeballs. Hindi channels, a new one is launched every week, are dominating news in the North. South Indian news channels ( Asianet - that is my absolute favorite) and other South Indian channels that also do News dominate the market in the South.
So where does NDTV's 24X7 go?

Me thinks the obvious logic (even if it isn't as obvious in NDTV's branding) is to go International. 24X7 can be the BBC World for Indians. Sadly, mere-copying of digital effects from the BBC will not suffice.

Case 3: Prime Minister's visit to Afghanistan - -
In every foreign stint, NDTV's broadcasts project a sense of impending fear and danger to their reporters. If anybody followed the Afghanistan story closely, the fear levels projected were akin to NDTV's recent stint interviewing key leaders of the LTTE in Sri Lanka. To me, it's quite hilarious that a channel gearing up to be India's premier International news channel, while on foreign assignments, displays the heart of Punjab's official state bird. The reporters have no grasp of international history. There is no sensitivity to ground sensibilities (and please don't tell me Barkha Dutt has a grip on Kashmiri sentiment!!!). Last night, Dr. Roy greeted his afghani foot soldier - Amitav, with relief oozing out every pore on his body. "Afghanistan is so dangerous - we're glad to have made contact with you, dear loyal NDTV reporter'. Forget the occasion - An Indian PM visits Afghanistan! No, NDTV is quite happy spreading the fear of Afghani soil. To my best judgement, I doubt Amitav strayed too far from the official Indian delegation's to-dos -- and yet, Dr. Roy felt it pertinent to ask if 'People in Afghanistan truly support democracy' - - HA HA HA - - Like Amitav would know.
And of course when faced with no answer, Amitav in true reporting fashion, replied with such zeal, you'd think the Afghanis were democratic by birth!

(Let's not forget how they sat and watched when Buddha was blown up)

Every time Dr. Roy comes to read the 9pm news - the device that scrolls the content always breaks down - or so it seems - for Dr. Roy is always faltering for words, expressions and when lost, he then injects his fast dilipidating personal sense -- The outcome is nothing short of goofy -- and this coming from our premier News channel (or so they would think )!

Somebody tell Dr. Roy to just up and quit! And bring on his disenchanted pupil - Rajdeep Sardesai -- I'll take his indignant panting for Dr. Roy's syrupy dialogue any day!

Comments

Priya.. I used to like Prannoy Roy at one time. But then, I left India ten years ago. At that time, he was the only sane media voice that seemed to make sense out of the merry-go-round politics of the time (read five Prime Ministers in quick time).
From your blog it appears that he isn't so likeable anymore. Wonder what went wrong?

I agree with almost the entire post. One thing which gets me thinking after reading case 2 is that Y dont people move out of the unsafe buildings?? Dont they fear the life of themselves and their family?

Should something be thought abt this and done rather than just to blame those people??

Dear Mansi,
NDTV is the only channel which has some semblance of professinalism unlike its Hindi counterparts.
It is fast & most of the times accurate. Television journalism has been invented by Prannoy Roy in India. And NDTV has proved that it is possible to build a 24 hour english news channel in India.
Now, every channel has its own interpretation of facts. One may or may not agree to that.Like Aaj Tak always tilts to the right while discussing politics.Star News remains a loyal Sonia bhakt.Headlines Today - the less we talk the better.NDTV is an oasis as it does not confine itself within the domain of politics, film & cricket.
Rajdeep for most if us has become history. Vikram Chandra in Big Fight has proved that the show was not dependent upon one individual.Another achievement of Dr Roy is he has groomed a few best anchors & television journalists in the last decade. This is his biggest contribution. We should never forget that.

Prannoy Roy is a Commie. The Commie Karats are his wife's relatives. Rajdeep recently called him a lala (seth) and said that he runs his Co. like a zamindari on a CNBC show. Delhi based journos know all about his blak deeds but wudnt say anything in open bcoz of Roy's political clout within the Commies and the Congress. Al the main people workin there are from influential and powerful familes of Delhi. If you are from traditional middle class background, never dream of gettin to anchor news on their channels. Also if one is south Indian and of dark complexion.
CNBC in comparison is far better.they recruit the best talent irrespective of ones back ground. just watch it to believe.

Posted by: No Name | 06/10/2005

I guess almost all the Indian news channels these days are turning into a tamasha. Most try to first of all show an exclusive news item or an interview which is shown on all the other 20 channels.

Most of the journalists lack general knowledge and are there because of ...

It seems as you rightly said giving the afghanistan example, news channels try to show that their reporters should be given some paramveer chakra for visting places. Gosh. they have turned into another ToI just looking for some juicy tidbits.

Posted by: Jaspreet | 12/10/2005

Beggers cant be choosers. At the moment, we do not have any Channel apart from AAJ Tak as a competition in the Current News space. AAJ Tak is again a Hindi Channel.
CNBC is not an apple to apple comparison as it deals more with Finance related news.

The big difference is most of the Talk shows n Chat shows are primarily Delhi audience and doesn't cover the rest of India.

Going by name of it, its truly MADE IN DELHI.(CAPITAL OF CORRUPTION). Prannoy will be using his contacts to get work done, but who doesn't in INDIA.

We need to wait n watch, what Rajdeep does with Broadcast Channel ?

Posted by: Santosh | 11/11/2005

i totally agree with you guys ndtv has gone to the dogs. you only have to watch the guys and gals with glasses, with lenses and still struglling to read the block print in front of them. the less said about the reporters on the site the better. they religiously chant theirs and the cameramens name everytime they end their littany of vernacular accented dialogues. the ones from the south and east takes the cake. when it is so obvious to us i wonder why they are still being persisted upon. there are far too many glitches, too many pauses and en number of sorrys in between sentences, why even in between words. this is sure to wean the english speaking educated middleclass away from your so called best news channel. my bet is on rajdeep sardesais new channel any day.

Truly, before CNN-IBN started NDTV was the channel i watched but somehow i felt it has lost punch that it had before. it had become biased elitist and purely delhi based serving for delhi and business class and politics. CNN-IBN is good and hope it stays that way

NDTV has no credibility at all

Let us look at the Genesis... Prannoy Roy was the chief in Star News before NDTV came up.

Every one knew their biassed reporting of the Kandahar incident where they aired the views of the relatives of the hijack victims just like anything that put the Govt in a Fix. MEdia has to be prudent, but Prannoy didn't do that at the time. Had he deffered telecasting them, the thenGovt could have got a chance to negotiate further or try the use of force or could have armtwisted Pakistan to release the hostages.

Now Prannoy's channel is telecasting some programmes for the Army and thier welfare.

Does he remember that the terrorists who were released on the IA Hijack deal have killed hundreds of army men...

Prannoy or NDTV cannot fool everyone

Respected Sir,

RE: AFTEREFFECTS OF THE JULY 26 FLOODS IN MUMBAI ....!

I, Audrey Vaz, am a resident of Roselands, Convent Avenue , Santa Cruz West, Mumbai 400 054.
My building wall adjoins that of Ms. Najma Hepatullah. To prevent soil erosion the Hepatullahs have
built a huge 12 feet wall around their propery which is a sprawling property, opposite St Theresa's
convent school, Santa cruz west, Mumbai - 54.

On the evening of 26 th July 2006, when the whole of Mumbai was flooded, I miraculously escaped being
crushed to death by this wall.

I just walked into my small flat at 23 Roselands and was saved. The huge wall crashed into my door and that
of our neighbours Roque Lobo.
Earlier a portion of the wall had fallen opposite my neighbour Mrs. Bernice Fernandes- which could have
seriously injured a few students.

We had requested the Hepatullahs to do something to do about the same as residents of Roselands have to
walk in fear to our respective flats.

There is a small sweepers Bharat Parmar quarters adjacent to the wall with a family of 7 people includinga
15 month child.

They are still spending each day and night in agony.

Mrs. Fernandes is a retired school teacher and give private tuitions to SSC and HSC students.

The Hepatullahs sister in law when approached coolly ignored the problem saying that Ms. Najma
Hepatullah is in the US or at Delhi.

The remainder portion of the wall is still hanging precariously and can collapse any time.

Our building is full of very senior citizens, most of whose children and grandchildren have emigrated
abroad.

When a few of us approached Ms. Hepatullah's relatives she requested us not to got to THE PRESS
or THE POLICE, and that we should solve the problem amicably- as we are neighbours. The BMC have
not bothered to do anything though Fr. Vincent from Sacred Heart Parish had sent a letter to them.

TILL DATE THE DEBRIS HAS NOT BEEN CLEARED, They have not only refused to demolish the Wall
which can collapse anytime and kill us, but they refused to listen and pay heed even to cutting down of a very
huge mango tree in their compound, whose branches have crashed on to our roofs causing
damage.

I even have the pictures of the wall which collapsed on my door and the door of my neighbour splitting it and
causing slush and other filth to enter their hall and even kitchen.

The Hepatullahs did not even bother to check if me and my mother were killed in the collpase.

Each stone is almost as huge as a computer, it is not a brick wall.

The wall is almost 45 years old and is a mixture of huge boulders and sand. We are just 2 feet away from the
wall and are forced to walk through this passage to enter our flats.

My elderly neighbours are helpless, they have been repeatedly requesting me to do something about this problem.Except for DNA, no newspaper editors are ready to report this case.

Can your T. V. News Channel pleasehelp us out....lives are at stake.

I am fighting this batlle single handedly I live alone with my widowed mother aged 68 years.

Thanking you in advance.

Yours Sincerely,

Audrey Vaz

NDTV'S is a very Anti-Hindu, Anti-National, and very bias with double standard news coverage.

If NDTV'S Burkha Dutt and her team if they care that much for all the human life why she never goes to Jammu and Kashmir to interview Hindu Pundits who are killed almost everyday and are the victims of not only Islamic terrorists but are victims of the Islamic government and CM running the the state of Jammu and Kashmir.

But if Islamic terrorists kill innocent people of Gujarat as a result riots occurs than NDTV team enjoys blaming the people and government of Gujarat everyday.

You ppl are right. When I was in nagapattinam after the tsunami ( a week after the tsunami) to do some relief work I happened to see the NDTV crew asking a normal woman to cry and then they continued with their coverage. We could see a lot of RSS ppl doing a commendable job ( even many of the fisher folks appreciated their relief work) and I dont find even a single word abt RSS in any media except the tamil weekly tuglaq ( editor is CHO . Ramasamy)

It shows that none of you know Dr. Roy. He is one of the nicest people I have ever met. He and his wife have nurtured a company that has grown into a massive corporation. News channels like Headlines Today, Times Now and CNN-IBN have people that originally worked with NDTV. NDTV made these people what they are.

In a nut shell, NDTV helped create the face of Indian media.

Posted by: relax | 13/06/2006

Prannoy Roy has a Communist and Leftist links, and NDTV reporting is bias and they are sympathetic to Communist Party, Congress Party, and Islamic and Leftist organizations.

Posted by: Bimal Biswas | 15/06/2006

NDTV is simply and plainly anti Hindu. They never miss a chance to take potshots at their tradition and culture.

Look at the composition of the audience in programs like "We the people". I wonder whether they come straight from the Communist Party Office or from some Islamist Organisation !

Posted by: Rishi | 23/01/2008

Dear NDTV,
I have some very serious concerns with the type of ‘Journalism’ that you and your network are portraying. It is sad to see the network deteriorated to this level. Take for example the Nuclear deal: In the way you covered it….. all of you Barkha and et el forgot that your main responsibility is towards the nation; but you concentrated on the slanting the report towards finding a reason to bash the UPA govt and became part of the shameful politics. Did you ever discuss in a technically competent manner as to what our ex President Kalam said about the deal, and also what our top nuclear scientist Anil Kakodkar said; this part was given hardly any coverage.
Let me ask you the fundamental Question is the Nuclear deal good for India or not? What is your answer? Look into your conscience and answer the question “have we done justice to the truth about the nuclear deal”. Do not give me the crap that we have to be unbiased; ideally there is no such thing; our questioning, our discussions are subconsciously guided by our own biases. If this bias was to ensure the facts about the nuclear deal then in that case, that is where your line of questioning would have centered; but that was not the case. The network completely participated in the politics while pretending to be unbiased. I am in the energy business and again in the oil sector; I design oil facilities; in short I understand the energy foot print; and nothing can meet our interim needs better than Nuclear option; above all I believe our president and our nuclear scientists. Again, you brought in no independent experts to discuss the nuclear deal and what is really good for the country; but you concentrated in the dirty politics….you Barkha and Prannoy I thought that both of you would at least show better judgment. Remember this episode probably brought your whole network to shame; the educated masses can see between the lines, and we are ashamed that you have conducted irresponsibly. I like NDTV, you do a great job on the animal front, for victims of injustice and for our army…that is very commendable; I feel proud.
However, regarding politics I hope you will stay above all the politics; if you do not believe me then listen to your own video recordings….you are fooling yourself. It was very gracious of the UPA to give BJP where credit was due. We would like to see this kind of emphasis; your network must publicize/replay such acts of graciousness; it can only breed more graciousness no matter from where it comes…. Please get back to the good work.

ndtv is anti-hindu. it never loses any opportunity to bash bjp or other hindu organizations. i was watching it today..and for two hours, they kept chatteeing about vhp and all the bad things that vhp, bjp and rss is doing.. these guys broadcasted another program recently questionning the recent arrests for blasts, linking it with arrests of innocent muslim youths. ndtv has become the first channel to ask for a ban on hindu organizations.

they did a similar thing during gujrat elections and when results came out, sheepish grins could be seen on the faces of the broadcasters.

i somrtimes hate watching this channel...

NDTV is bullshit !!! When India does Nuclear test, NDTV says India should provide food to poor not Nuclear bombs & peace with pak. Then after nuclear deal if USA put restrictions on Nuclear tests what is the problem? we will get cheap power...Stupid Communists !

Posted by: Chinmay | 03/09/2008

I agree.

Watching NDTV during the recent mumbai islamist terror attacks I've noticed the rumours about the channel being anti-hindu is very true.

Burkha and her team of idiots have now backtracked on their "Resilient Mumbaikers" stance and are now agree with the masses that Why Should Mumbaikers be resilient, stop saying it.

Another thing, when a crowd behind her were chanting anti pakistani slogans where the real heroes (commandos) had finished their job, she said "Unfortunately they are chanting anti pakistani slogans" (which were of course edited out).

I'm sorry Burkha but this is INDIA, a country who is on the verge of exposing the fact we've known for decades - that PAKISTAN sponsers the very terrorists that bomb our soil and you are saying what? Unfortunately.

Unfortunately NDTV only cares about its International reputations (its the only news channel from India that broadcasts in Pakistan) so of course they are not going to use deserved terms such as Islamic Terrorism, or even grill the hell out of Mullahs and Muslims as they do Hindus.

Remember the Saffron terrorism headline concerning Hindus. Why oh why do we as a people allow NDTV to be Indias new channel.

I was born in the UK and have access to NDTV, the last straw for me was definitely the recent attacks. I'm in India now and am thankful I have other options for news sources over NDTV but am saddened the people of my heart and origin are allowing the country to go to the dogs in this way.

I am not anti muslim, I just believe that to rid the country of terrorism we must follow the US stance. They use the term Islamic terrorism without fear as its true. They go and hunt out any country that they believe is associated with bombing their nation. What is the result of this? No more attacks on home soil. Please Bharat learn from these people, they are offering you their help...

Cut any ties with Pakistan (including housing their singers, actors etc), accept LOC as permanent border, stop corruption - the nation is suffering because of it and concentrate on the continous improvement of India. You are doing a great job so far people...

Sometimes you want to write something but you could not able to put your thoughts on paper.
NDTV and gango (IBN/Timesnow) knows that people who will think both ways will understand there biased reporting and opinion. We are not there audienece. There Audienece is the immature minds in India who gets carrried away by there biased reporting. I also used to be in same state sometime back, thinking BJP is not good party and congress is. But looking closely I think congress is good till Rajiv Gandhi but after that its now worst. Kids of exCongress netas now taking there place . They are just following congress tradition of bhai-beta waad.
Anyways the bias reporting by NDTV is dividing country more deeper then before.

Posted by: Rajesh Hindustani | 24/12/2008

NDTV is biased channel. Burkha dutt is utterly stupid

Posted by: vikas | 27/12/2008

I agree.
Everyone must raise voice against it.
I am hating this channel. I m so angry that i want to slap few journalist.
If truth is bitter i don't mind watching it.
I hate false projection of news.
When 26/11 happened everyone knew some insiders are involved. one opposition politician raise this issues in media.
Ndtv were at him big time at that time.
Now findings are coming after headly arrest. No one is apologizing now.
I hate each and every person who are directly or indirectly involved in any kind of anti indian activities.

In the Aazadi conference (October2010) Arundhati Roy said - "Kashmir should get azadi from bhookhe-nange Hindustan" which has created quite an uproar in India, but strangely didn't see NDTV reporting much on her. Later I found that Arundhati Roy happens to be Pranoy Roy's cousin. Now it all falls in place.

Msg For NDTV 24X7:

I had been a regular viewer of your channel. But in the past one year, the quality of news on 24X 7 has reached an abysmal level - matched only by few 3rd grade music channels. Your biased view points (almost sounds like a mouthpiece of a particular national party), duplicitous presentation of current affairs, an overdose of Bollywood – has all the ingredients of a untrustworthy news channel. May I request your senior editors to dig up your archives and dust up some old recordings of “The world this week” ( ie if you still have them !!!) and remind ( re-educate ??) themselves on how news should be presented. Seems like two of your most senior and decorated editors are so “bowled over” by government titles and awards, they lost credibility as an editor and ruined the channel. May I also add, if I want to watch Prinkya Chopra blab , or know what Big B had for breakfast I won’t switch on a news channel.
